Our Connection with the New Zealand Comedy Trust.
It might come as a surprise, but yes accountants do have a funny bone. More than that, we at PKF Withers Tsang understand the profound value the arts bring to society. The creative sector is more than entertainment it’s a reflection of who we are. Comedy, in particular, has a unique way of cutting through the noise. The best humour often carries the biggest truths, sparking self-expression, social change, and connection.
This year, we’re proud to celebrate a milestone that’s close to our hearts: the 30th anniversary of the New Zealand Comedy Trust. The Trust, which oversees the annual NZ International Comedy Festival, has helped foster an environment where local comedic talent can flourish and sustainable careers can be built. And for over two decades, we’ve been fortunate to walk alongside them, supporting their mission and helping to ensure their financial wellbeing.
Our relationship with the Comedy Trust was championed by one of our own, Carole Pedder, Director at PKF Withers Tsang and was a long-time board member and Chair of the Trust. Carole is a passionate advocate for the arts and the critical role they play in shaping an inclusive, thoughtful, and vibrant Aotearoa. Her work behind the scenes has not only helped the Trust grow, but also highlighted the powerful ways business and the arts can work together to build something greater.
For Carole, the connection is personal. “Comedy creates space for truth and insight in ways that traditional channels often can’t. It allows us to see ourselves and our society more clearly, and sometimes that’s exactly what’s needed,” she says.
As a firm, we couldn’t agree more. By supporting creative organisations like the Comedy Trust, we’re investing in a more robust, hopeful, and expressive society one that dares to dream and dares to laugh. It’s a world we all want to be part of, and we’re proud that our financial guidance has helped the Trust and its performers focus on doing what they do best: bringing joy and meaning to people across the country.
“Comedy might be built on laughter, but its impact runs far deeper—it sparks conversations, fosters connection, and drives real economic value. In 2024 alone, the NZ International Comedy Festival generated $10.3 million in gross economic benefit. Carole Pedder’s belief in comedy as a force for truth and insight has helped guide the Trust through big decisions, challenges, and bold dreams. We’re proud to have partners like PKF Withers Tsang who understand that supporting the arts is an investment in the heart of our culture.” – Lauren Whitney, Chief Executive, New Zealand Comedy Trust
So, here’s to 30 years of side-splitting laughter, thought-provoking performances, and the incredible team behind the scenes at the New Zealand Comedy Trust. It’s been our privilege to be part of the journey and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
